Airsoft gun laws in Oklahoma

Airsoft guns are used daily for sport practices or personal satisfaction when shooting bottles or friends in the nearby forest.

Oklahoma has some laws that must be respected just as any other state and I have made a research through the law trying to find any useful information that I could share with you so that you do not break the law somehow.

I must say that most of the law I have found is there to regulate the firearms like real guns, air rifles or bb guns and not much was found in terms of the airsoft guns.

So I have decided to share with you what I have found and also to share the best practices that may protect you from breaking the law that is not directly mentioned in the firearm section but may still be broken if you use your airsoft replica inadequately.

For instance there is a Breach of the peace and such law may be violated even if you did not find any law forbidding you the use of airsoft guns on public property.

Are Airsoft guns legal in Oklahoma?

In general, Airsoft guns are legal for entertainment purposes such as the field games or for the private use inside the privacy of your home. Most public places are sensitive and forbid airsoft guns by all means.

I have found the Law of some Oklahoma universities that have it regulated under the „Weapon“ section and they clearly mention Airsoft guns as weapons.

The „firearm“ is defined by the State Law as any device capable of discharging a projectile composed of any material which may be expected to cause a lethal injury and using either gas, gunpowder or any means of rocket propulsion.

The conclusion of mine is that you should treat your airsoft gun as a real gun although it is not if you want to be sure that you do not break any possible law.

Use your airsoft guns only on the property that has the permit from the land owner (join a local airsoft community) or on your public property.

Whenever you must go in public, make it sure that the replica is well fitted in a gun bag or case. Bags and cases are a great investment for future, especially if you decide to add up some gear to the arsenal, make it sure that you have one big enough.

I have written a guide on best bags and cases for airsoft and you can find it here.

Are you allowed to shoot airsoft guns in your backyard in Oklahoma?

You can surely shoot your airsoft replica anywhere and anytime within your backyard.

Many people shoot BB guns in their backyard although they are considered more dangerous than airsoft guns.

You should be cautious that you do not shoot any random passenger if you live by the road, because the last thing they want to experience is to get hit in the forehead after having already stressful life.

The other important thing that you must be aware of is that discharging even a single BB on your neighbour’s property may be seen as a violation of the private property.

If you follow such rules and do not aim at people outside from your backyard, you should be fine.

The last concern may be the neighbours ill will, if they call the police, you may have to explain a thing or two but you should be fine because you are not violating anything.

Should you remove the orange tip from your gun in Oklahoma?

There are no additional laws that will punish you if you remove the orange tip in Oklahoma however, whether you should do it or not is another question.

All guns must be marked as it is stated in the Federal Law, this applies to all shops and stores or imported airsoft guns.

The purpose of this is to make it easier to tell it a part from the real gun, however in reality common folk get frightened anyways and police officers have a problem distinguishing them from afar distances.

You should not display your airsoft replica anywhere in the public anyways, so the orange markings should not be a problem.

Most players remove them after purchasing because they want a more appealing look on their replicas, you can do the same but never display it in public or be really cautious because there comes the responsibility with it.

Edmond Laws that apply to the airsoft guns

There is a Federal Law, State Law and sometimes regional or city Law.

There are certain laws that can be found in Edmond and they strictly forbid some use of airsoft guns.

Markings are mandatory

It is considered as an offence for any person that possesses an airsoft gun that is not properly and permanently marked with a blaze orange tip or marked by some other colors such as white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright pink, bright blue or bright purple.

If a gun does not have such markings installed on it whether it is removed or have not been installed previously at all, it is considered as a Class B Misdemeanor as defined by the Ordinances of the City of Edmond.

This means that there is a law that forbids you from removing the markings (beside the Federal Law) and therefore it is far more risky if you decide to do it on your own.

Strict law on misbehaviour regarding airsoft guns

It considered as an offence for any person that decides to brandish or exhibit an airsoft replica gun in the presence of another. This applies to both marked and non-marked replicas.

Therefore if the victim can reasonably believe that the person is actually in possession of a real and operable firearm even if it not, the Class A Misdemeanor is invoked.

The punishments for violations

If the gun has been altered to look like the real thing, the fine that shall be applied is $244.

If such airsoft replica guns were used for threatening the victim as mentioned above, the fine of $544 shall be applied.

Best practices to keep yourself safe from breaking the law

Stay away from the school premises

This is a sensitive topic and you should bear it on mind. Displaying it in public is wrong but displaying it nearby the school premises can be considered as a greater violation.

Therefore many schools have their own laws  regarding weapons that add up to the State Law.

Do not use airsoft guns for self defense

Some people think that this is a good idea, some do not. You can read more about this topic on my post here.

It certainly can bring more law issues to you then you would expect.

Be careful how you transport it

Always carry your replica in a bag whenever transporting it in public and bear on mind that it is suggested that you keep the replica out of the reach when driving.

For traveling with airsoft guns in Oklahoma or outside, check my post where I mention the tips for safe transport including the airports.

Treat it as a real gun

If you follow this rule, you probably do not have to worry about any violation.

Airsoft guns may be high class toys but can still be dangerous in some scenarios, by respecting them as the real guns you will certainly surpass many difficulties.

I have written a book for you. In my beginner book you’ll find everything you must know before stepping into the field.
